Linnea is reading The Very Hungry Caterpillar to herself, aloud. She's just confused herself with the repetition of "and then he ate [number] apples" etc. So we got "And then he eight nine sausages, STILL HUNGY!"

You will all be glad to hear that he "Not hungy anymore, big caterpillar, BOOTful butterfly, anymore, ahhhhhhh."

I am still actively surprised when I come across under-40s who don't know this story well. As far as I'm concerned it's as much a requirement of childhood as learning to walk or talk. :D

I think I'm missing something here, possibly because I have heard the book read so many times that I have blanked out the memory. If 'eight' and 'ate' are homonyms in your/Linnea's accent, how could you tell which one she was saying? (They're homonyms in my original accent, but in <lj user=aegidian?'s, 'ate' is pronounced 'et', and I do sometimes fall into that myself.)

We read that to James as well. He's doing pretty well at turning the pages, even if it usually ends up as "And then he ate... his copy of 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' and farted thunderously".
