I think I'm missing something here, possibly because I have heard the book read so many times that I have blanked out the memory. If 'eight' and 'ate' are homonyms in your/Linnea's accent, how could you tell which one she was saying? (They're homonyms in my original accent, but in <lj user=aegidian?'s, 'ate' is pronounced 'et', and I do sometimes fall into that myself.)
