I have a nasty sinus ick. Showed up on Saturday, still here now.

When I bend down, my head aches. The worst is the left-hand-side, where my jaw is aching pretty constantly. My eyes hurt. When I blow my nose, I get a wild range of colours, from yellow to green to orange. I'm going through tissues like a toddler with a Kleenex fetish.

I sleep stomach-down at night; I have two pillows under my chest, and a huge body-pillow folded up under my head, so I'm sort of sleeping on a wedge. This enables my sinuses to drain a bit, or at least not to get worse. I wake several times a night to blow my nose and this morning I woke up some time before 6:30 (after getting to sleep well after midnight) because I couldn't breathe any more.

Yesterday evening I noticed that my throat is getting sore. Today it's raw, horribly raw.

I'm allowed Lockets lozenges in moderation, and precious little else. I'm pretty clear that this is an honest to goodness infection, not hayfever, at this point. I've never had hayfever in my life so I wasn't sure if I was suddenly getting it for the first time because I'm pregnant in June.

I suppose if I get sick enough I go to the doctor and take antibiotics while pregnant. Yuck.

I'm sorry you are not well.

The Ayur-veda doctor gave this as a home-remedy recipe for sore throat:

honey and turmeric, turmeric is astrigent, more honey if it tastes yuck -
one spoon of honey, one of turmeric, mix, have half a teaspoon every 2-3 of hours.

He made no mention of keeping stuff from spilling or sticking, or preventing making everything Yellow.

I don't know what it's called, but an aquaintence of mine recommended an Indian therapy, where you get a little teapot type thing, filled with blood-heat salt water, and pour it in one nostril, it washed everything out and eventually comes out the other side, she said it was wonderful!

*edit* It's called a neti pot:

The weirdest bit is supposedly how much water goes in before any comes out, sinuses are big things!

I've done similar for bad sinuses after years of taking them to the GP to be told to bog off. It really helps. So does drinking as much water as possible and hot tea. Nothing cures it, but the salted water is the best - you have to get the right amoutn of salt though. Too much is burny and too little is a different sort of burny.

I wish I had useful suggestions that you aren't already doing. I second the honey suggestions, although would be wary of pouring saline through them as that can damage them even when done with a doctor, and I'm told hurts like hell too...

I;d say if you've had it for more than 7 days with no sign of improvement that visiting a doctor would be a good idea, even if you ask to avoid antibiotics for longer.

I spent most of my teens with vile sinusitis, steam inhalations (with and without menthol), hot drinks and massaging the front of my face didn't always help either. In my case I had ENT problems which made me more likely to get it. I hope you get better soon.

I have heard that oil of oregano works well for things like this, but I don't know if you can use it while pregnant (I know you have to be very careful even with herbal remedies whilst preggers.)

Hope you feel better soon!
