Linnea and I ate something and both got back to sleep eventually. Then Rob left for work and Emer woke up so that was that.

I've run the dishwasher and the washing machine. I've removed one of two stairgates still up post-guests, which hurt my hands. I need to sort dry laundry, wash everyone, get dressed.

I don't want to.

Today's whine: When moving dirty dishes from the table to the empty, ready-for-dirty-things dishwasher, why pile them somewhere else in the kitchen first? From A to B - why via point C?

Things to do today: Mount new shelf in kitchen for teatowels, put highchair back in attic, put rucksacks back in attic, swap over mattresses in spare room, re-rinse and hang a ton of damp laundry, see bathroom guy about quote at 6 pm, clean bathroom first, make everyone lunch, bake bread, call health visitor about breastfeeding awareness week party, buy Linnea sandals (yeah right), tidy rear hall, tidy dining room, tidy front room, tidy front hall including clear coat racks, sort extra cutlery and crockery for storage, dismember something small and fluffy with my teeth, eat chocolate cake in a mug. Rob made me a lovely chocolate cake in a mug at bedtime last night.

11:00 am - put away a load of clean dry nappies ready to use, got both children to brush their teeth.

12:00 - washed two drainer-loads of dishes, ran the dishwasher again, sorted two loads of dry laundry, rinsed two loads of damp laundry for hanging, sorted the bathroom a bit more (soap, loo-roll etc), failed to interest the children in lunch.

14:00 - hung two loads of wet laundry, put Linnea's wet bedding on to wash, emptied dishwasher again, fed everyone beans and couscous for lunch, forgot to mention showered and dressed earlier, sorted huge bags of mixed rubbish in the kitchen into recycling and landfill (ew), did the day's moneywrangling, cleared the dining table, started planning another Big Storage Space Re-Org.

21:00 - Made chicken soup with the stock from Sunday's roast, sorted under-stairs cupboard and reorganised bag storage, took winter hats out of circulation, tidied children's games, lego and k'nex into under-stairs storage, sorted through 7 complete packs of playing cards and 8 incomplete ones (we haven't played cards much since Janice went to Canada so of course we have 15 packs in the house), brushed Emer's teeth while she cried, discussed bathroom with plumber, checked the children won't be given too much natural or added sugar while away at the weekend (poor, poor Emer), fretted a lot about Emer's teeth.

If point C is somewhere to dispose of debris, leftover food, or just organise things it might make sense? I frequently move things from the table to the surface above the dishwasher before loading them. It makes for less bending down when loading if the things one is loading are all directly above the machine, for instance. I have *no* idea why it happens in your house though, especially if you don't like it to. :-)

oof. I'm tired just reading that!

In our house it's empty the dishwasher to a pile on the table, then put everything away. Except there is often a gap between pile building and the putting away. drives me nuts.

Hmm, I do this!

I pile stuff up on the counter above the dishwasher first, then load it all into the dishwasher in one go. This is because bending to put stuff into the dishwasher is a pain, so if I ferry it all across first then I can crouch down and lift it down one item at a time to load it in. Easier than walk, pick up, walk, bend/crouch, straighten up, walk... repeat.

Um, I do this because at the point I carry a load of dirty dishes into the kitchen, I often don't know if the dishwasher is ready-to-receive, so I stack by the sink and then check.

Possibly I am still struggling to override 4 years of no-dishwasher with nearly 2 years of dishwasher. I should probably learn to check the dishwasher first. Or empty it as soon as it is finished (ho ho ho).

on a related note, my dishwasher whine (quite funny really):

I put stuff waiting to go in the dishwasher (which is in the laundry room) on the bit of worktop next to the door into the laundry room.

Ever since we got the dishwasher, Rob would bring his morning drinks mugs downstairs and place them carefully on the worktop next to the kettle (ie on the other side of the kitchen).

Then one day, several years later, he put his mugs carefully on the Waiting For The Dishwasher Worktop.

Which was great. Except that it was the day after we had cleared the laundry room ready for the building work, and the dishwasher was sitting unplumbed in the lounge.

And they say women's brains are incomprehensible.

I'm here to confess that I stack dishes in the kitchen and *then* fill the dishwasher ...

Our dishwasher routine is: Jonathan puts the dirty dishes straight in the machine after dinner in the evening and switches it on last thing at night. I empty it and put away the clean dishes first thing in the morning (while my one-cup-a-day of coffee is brewing). Then I know it's ready to receive dirty dishes any time during the day!

But then, there's only two of us now. Not sure how it would work if we had to put it on more than once a day. Ironically, we never had a dishwasher when we had five kids in the house. (We couldn't afford one then!) We used to take turns to wash and wipe in those days. Oh, happy days! (NOT!)
