Oopsadaisy: Pothole
Jun. 16th, 2008 08:48 pmAbout ten o'clock this morning I was trikling the girls around town and looking for the bike racks that used to be by the town hall; some were obscured by building-site hoarding and some by illegally parked vans and cars, so I went around the corner by the town hall, towards the Forbury, and found that there aren't any on that street either and I'd just decided the hell with it, I'll turn back and lock up at some railings, there's nothing coming either way, when my U-turn met a long, narrow pothole / poorly reparied road surface and the trike went over on its side.
Ow.
The girls were utterly unhurt and their safety straps stayed put. Their helmets stayed put. Emer's helmet came into contact with something and has a tiny dent so will need to be replaced, but in general they are fine. Emer didn't like Linnea's weight bearing down on her side like that at all. Linnea wasn't all that keen on it either. Several men appeared from nowhere (perhaps from the illegally parked cars?) and picked us up and were very very concerned, and a museum employee on his way to the town hall anyway walked us to the main entrance and got us permission to park the trike in the lobby, so I was able to bring the girls to their art session at the Jelly Legg'd Chicken. That same man followed me in later with a cup of coffee with sugar. For which I didn't pay; he was lovely.
Two conversations:
Random Helpful Man: "Is the bike ok?"
Linnea, sideways in the overturned trike: "Ascuse me, it's not a bike, it's a trike."
Ailbhe: [helpless hysterical laughter]
Museum employee who bought me coffee: "Here you go."
Linnea: "Ascuse me, my mummy doesn't like cow's milk, you must take those [UHT milk and creamer pots] away."
Ailbhe: [embarrassed hysterical laughter]
My leg was a bit hurt but I could walk on it ok so that was fine. We did painting and had a cup of tea and some biscuits and I checked the trike was ok to go and we cycled around to John Lewis, where we looked for a bike helmet and had lunch, and then I pushed the trike past the bike shop where I failed to get anyone's attention to sell me a bike helmet, and then I left the girls at nursery and cycled across town to my appointment near the hospital. That was a two-hour appointment, and by the end of it I couldn't stand.
So I called Rob to get the girls from nursery and I cycled the trike one-legged to the hospital around the corner and crawled and hopped from the drop-off parking to the A&E main entrance. I arrived there about 4:30 and by 6 pm I had painkillers, crutches, and some X-rays showing no serious damage to my knee. I wrenched it a bit when I was counterbalancing the toppling trike - which I did manage to slow down significantly! - but didn't do it any serious damage.
So now I'm minding two tiny tots while on crutches. I think if we leave the house I will HAVE to have Emer in a sling as I can't imagine managing a buggy with crutches and she's not able to walk with me without holding my hand.
Oh well. It's nice to know the trike is ok even if I turn it on its side with the children in it.
