There's a heart-shaped bara brith in the oven. Linnea wants a pink heart birthday cake, and I want to practice with icing. I'm not really sure what the best idea is. I don't really know how to make the kind that you buy in packets and roll out, and I can't use marzipan anyway because of guests' allergies. I'm going to see what happens with the instructions on the packet for Glace Icing.

If it works, I'm sorted, and if not, I'll think of something else. We can always do another strawberry-decorated one, but she wants pink. PINK! Yay for PINK!

Lola likes pink, you see.

Of course, what Linnea REALLY wanted was a kangaroo cake, but I couldn't quite work out how.

My experience with Glace Icing is that the cake needs to be *absolutely cool* before you ice it.

Oh yes, the colder the better.

A "stiff" buttercream icing (you can make these with a good margarine if butter is a no-no)? It would be easier to spread onto the cake than standard Royal Icing or Glacé Icing anyway.

Oh, and if you want to use the premade icing, if Jam is OK, a very thin layer of that instead of marizpan will help the icing to stick better.

A lot of people recommend a fondant made with marshmallows. I've never tried it, but it's supposed to work well and taste good.

I seem to remember (from a birthday cake of a vivid orange-icing hue) that the best icing to roll out is fondant icing. It's 450g icing sugar, 1 medium egg white (whisked) and 50 g (2 oz) of liquid glucose (from a pharmacy, usually) with colouring and flavouring of your choice. Sieve the icing sugar into a bowl and make a well in the centre. Add the egg white and glucose then knead well until fondant is smooth. Add the colouring and flavouring as desired. Sprinkle a surface well with icing sugar to roll out the icing

It's been years and years since I've even attemped to make it but I do remember it rolled out quite nicely.

Just in case you need an alternative to glace icing.

I get away lightly with cakes and icing as if it has chocolate on it, Roisin is more than happy.

I make my own frosting/icing, a basic buttercream (though I use shortening, not butter; I find butter a touch overwhelming in such quantities).

If you want a procedure, I can let you know, though I don't really do measurements much; I've been making it since I was a kid, so I know how to do it by the enough.

I decorated Kate's butterfly shaped birthday cake just with pink coloured butter icing & that worked fine for a bunch of 5 / 6 year olds :) One of her friends is a ceoliac, but her mum doesn't expect food to be all friendly for her & brings GF food to things like that. I did offer to make something seperate, but was told there was no need.

Thought this kangaroo cookie cutter (http://blossomsugarart.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=134) might give you a shape template for next time you want to do a kangaroo cake.

You can evolve pruchased that you will manufacture acrid vetenarian and have your kangaroo cake migrated at a certainly deterministic price.

Jack also likes pink. We bought him a swim/sun suit with flotation aids in it, the other day. He had the choice of orange and black, or pink and blue. The pink suits his hair beautifully. We laugh in the face of gender stereotyping...

His birthday cake last year was a Numberjacks 4. OldBloke spent a lot of time whipping yet more blue into the buttercream icing to get the right shade, but it iced the cake pretty easily.

Being a Spoiled Brat, with a mother who possesses negative competence with cakes - and my attempts at a pirate ship cake seem to indicate that when it comes to shaped ones I have inherited that - a Dougal shaped cake was puchased for my 4th birthday.
I promptly burst into tears and refused to let them cut it, so it lived on top of the fridge until I finally lost interest and let them throw it out.
