Red Mars, Mars Bars
May. 15th, 2009 11:48 pmI liked Red Mars, and then there was Green Mars, and then there was Blue Mars, and really, I think Red Mars had a real novel in there, but the other two had some bright ideas about terraforming and oh hang on aren't we supposed to have a story I wonder where I can find a plot oh yes let's use sexlives that'll do anyway about this desert-into-oceans thing, you need plants...
I had a Mars Bar the other day, first time in years. They're not as good as I remember. I liked the caramel flavour but the rest wasn't worth eating, really. Sugar hit! I must work out how to do non-dairy non-soya caramel or chewy toffee. I have some bonfire toffee but it's more like butterscotch to my mind; toffee is chewy, not sharp.
Emer is still mostly off sugar, but we've found some sugarfree sweets for her, so it's not as difficult. Though she had a banana after brushing her teeth this evening. Still, it seems like her tooth doesn't actually hurt, that was a temporary state of affairs possibly in the hope that it would stop me brushing her teeth one day. Dint work.
I continue to compare, several times a day, Linnea's life with mine at her age. It's startling. My mother got pretty thoughtful about it earlier today, too.
Linnea is so much like me, in so many ways. It's going to be exciting to see where she goes. Not where I did, I promise you that!

Date: 2009-05-16 07:30 am (UTC)Note on the Spellsinger Cycle or whatever it's called, one book is The Soprano Sorceress and the other is The Spellsong War and there's a third apparently. Don't bother. Unless you really, really, really like mucus.

Date: 2009-05-17 07:05 am (UTC)There's this scene in book one where there's been a flood and she's visiting it. The peasants explain that there's no clean water to drink, none. So she asks for dirty water and spells several buckets of it clean.
And then bathes in it. Ugh. I mean, luckily that world seems not to have cholera, but... ugh. From that point on, I lost all sympathy with her.
