I recently acquired a set of Lilypadz because mere absorbent breastpads cannot possibly hope to cope with my supply. The idea is that these pads actually stop the leaking, rather than merely soaking it up before it reaches the outside of my clothes.

They seem to work so far, though I haven't tried them in the morning when things are soggiest.

The freakish thing is that they work basically by pushing the nipple in and holding it there. Looking down, it looks like I'm wearing some kind of padded bra. I've been smoothed. Sculpted. My clothes look different. It's very disconcerting.

I have a vague feeling that this nippleless look is considered desirable in parts of the US, partially because of the blurb on the box, not quoted here for fear of perpetuating scary anti-nipple rhetoric.

if anyone shows actual nipple outlines, americans think the person wants to have sex RIGHT NOW, that slut. therefore -- smoothing those pesky nipples makes one look wholesomely puritan.

In my case, back when I wore bras, the "therefore" was "therefore, if I wear padded bras people won't stare at me and automatically think of me as a sex object quite so much, which would be awfully nice".

Honestly, no-one I have ever known spends as much energy thinking about how to interpret situations sexually as the Average American seems to. Do we know any Average Americans?

i do know some. *shudder*. from a healthy distance, mind. but occasionally when i am thrust (THRUSTING means SEX!) into the mainstream i count myself incredibly lucky (GETTING LUCKY! *nyuk-nyuk*) that in my circles of friends and internet (PORN) pals, cluelessness does not run rampant (RAMPANT SEX DRIVE!), nor does preoccupation with things sexual (SEXUAL! zie said SEXUAL!).

in all seriousness, i was annoyed by this when i first came to the US. the degree to which random people drag perfectly innocuous things into sexual innuendo, the *nudge*nudge* stuff that goes on when gossipping, and the neverending crassness with which everything is sold via sexual reference, if not outright sexual in-your-face T&A display, it really grated on my nerves. and yes, it was much worse than anywhere i had lived in europe, and it's still worse than in canada.

well, I do know that when the afp-circle was younger (my afp-circle, that is) Finding Innuendo was one of its primary pastimes - but we're talking people barely out of, or indeed still enduring, adolescence, and they all outgrew it, more or less.

And it was done only for humour, never from a serious belief that, eg, onion rings and fries are actually sexual symbols.

I read in some fashion magazine or other that visible nipples are/will be fashionable in the UK this autumn/winter. Honestly, both attitudes boggle me just as much.
