I eat well. I have a good diet. We have a proper cooked dinner every day. We have proper breakfast. We almost always have a decent lunch, because since I have to do one for Linnea I have to do one for myself. For in-between-meals snacks we have a range of homebaked treats, and fruit.

So what do I crave when pregnant? Foods that normally make me feel queasy even to discuss. Take-away pizza. Crisps. Chips (though not often). And three times now, burgers. Twice sourced from McDonalds and once from Burger King. I even have ethical objections to those places, which normally means we don't darken their doors nor give them an accidental profit, and still the cravings mount. And now? Now I also crave McDonalds apple pies. Not that they are pies, they're frittery deep-fried batter things.

I know Linnea's diet is very low-fat for a toddler; I've been trying to increase the fat, with fatty nuts and olive oil and letting her have the skin of the roast chicken (she rejected it). But does this mean mine is too? Where can I get more fat? I don't like burgers! (Though I love the gherkins). I always want to stop eating them just after halfway through. They are Not Real Food.

You may be low in animal fats? Maybe make some pastry products for yourself containing "proper" hard fats, maybe buy a small box of frozen burgers to pop in the freezer so you can do homemade burger buns (these would be much smaller than the McD's ones)? Maybe consider frying some things where you would normally grill them?

As goes getting more fat - I don't know what your stance on the following are but:

Fried eggs

Fried bacon

Grilled rump steak (with a decent layer of fat still attached)

Toast with real (not low-fat-spread) butter - I realise that the dairy intolerance may rule this out.

Decent sausages - I'd recommend the Tescos 6-to-a-pack ones - I think they may be the "Finest" range

Grilled Lorne sausage

If you're craving burgers occasionally then the Rustlers 90-second nuke-a-burgers are pretty good - I'd recommend avoiding the QuickSnacks ones as they have instant-heartburn levels of onion in them. Keep a couple in the fridge and just nuke them when you feel like them.

As goes "not real food" - try making your own with some decent mince and fresh egg as a binding - spice to order - you can even convince yourself that they're not burgers if you try hard.

Actually, along that line of thought - maybe also try home-made meatballs?

I too have been eating more chips than normal. And burgers, though only once a fast food one. I suspect you know all the standard sources of 'healthy' fat as well as I do, but I like oatcakes as a snack to help me resist crisps and home made burgers are good too. And avocados. I can never have too much of them.

Can you eat goat's cheese? I'm rationing myself but at the moment I can eat small amounts without the negative affects of cow's milk.

it sounds to me like you are craving fats, iron, and protein.

perhaps homeade burgers for dinner one night? with avocado on top? (i know you are avoiding cheese).

also: beef fajitas with guacamole. MMMMMMMM.

could you also be craving salt by any chance?

When I get fat cravings (and I do, though I'm not anywhere remotely close to pregnant), I find that pouring a little top-quality extra-virgin olive oil into a saucer, adding a little salt and perhaps some herbs, and dipping bread into it is just the thing. And heart-healthy, too.

Alternately, if less healthful: Good, sweet butter slathered on dense, hearty bread.

Are the pies there really deep fried? In North America, they're baked. [livejournal.com profile] okoshun had a huge thing for the fried ones and was really upset when they stopped making them. When we went to Malaysia, she just about lost her mind because she found out that they were still fried there.

Oh, and I'm not positive about this, but I suspect that cashew butter is quite high-fat.

Good home-made burgers from quality mince are delightful, and knock McDs et al into a cocked hat.

I am spoilt, the University Sports and Social Club, which is like a staff bar with food, does these and I regularly have them on a Monday lunchtime with Tony.

I'm right there with ya! I wouldn't worry too much about eating 3 fast food hamburgers. That is about how many I've had as well.

You'll return to normal when you don't have to share your body. Being pregnant makes us do a lot of weird things!
