Motherhood brings with it a lot of First Times. The First Time one sees one's baby. The First Time one feeds ones baby. The First Time one changes a nappy. The First Time one cannot console no matter what one does. The First Time one goes to the bathroom unaccompanied. The First Time one has a bath alone with no pee in it.

Today was the First Time I had a Lush bath.

My Lush parcel arrived this morning, and true to the word of several friends, the individual items don't smell as frightening as the shops. This evening, Rob needed to go to a friend's to print off a couple of CVs for his interview tomorrow (wish him luck; he has a new haircut and a clean shirt already) and he took Linnea with him, as these friends are so keen on Linnea we hide her passport.

So I ran a bath and got in and dropped a Butterball Bath Bomb into the hot water. It fizzed. Basically, it's a ball of bicarb and citric acid, and when it gets wet they react and fizz. We used to do something similar with pillboxes, tissue, vinegar and bicarb; sometimes the lid of the box would shoot up over the roof of my mother's house. Cool. In with the bicarb etc, there's some oil and scent. It was basically a fun-to-watch way of getting bath oil into the water. It was pleasant to lie in, very mildly scented, and my skin feels smooth but not greasy. I didn't wash a whole lot since washing bath oils off with soap seems kind of pointless to me.

I have one more bath bomb, and I don't think I'll bother with them any more. I get more pleasure from massaging bath products into my skin, so I'll choose rich soaps and things in future.

Around bedtime, I'm going to try the Temple Balm that's supposed to aid sleep. I could use some nice restful sleep with dreams in which no-one dies or is murdered. It would make a pleasant change. Another dream about a long lie-in would be nice. After waking from that one, I felt as though I'd had ten hours' sleep.

Butterball is one of my favoutite bath bombs. I do love them, but don't use / buy them very often as it's so much cheaper to buy soap or bubble bath. My favoutite is the big blue as it smells of seaweed & reminds me of home. Let me know how the temple balm works as my sleep deprivation is getting bad again. Ta :)

For me, it's the *stuff* they put in them. I don't think the butterball has anything, and that's why I don't get it. But the ones with rose petals, or glitter, or confetti, or *stuff* are excellent.

Since you like to rub stuff on, I recommend the massage bars. *Excellent*.

Oh! And please do let us know about the temple balm. I'm the second person I know to have gotten a severe headache from one of their balms.

On the "Massaging nifty things into body" front : I really like many of the massage bars. I'm particularly fond of Therapy and SleepyHead, but there's lots of chance for variety.

The bonus of the massage bars is that when they get too small to use comfortably as a bar, yo ucan chop them up in tiny bits and throw a small chunk (erm. I'd say quarter sized, but that doesn't translate. Tablespoonful of salt/sugar/etc?) Bath may be a bit slippery, but it's a very effective oil + scent dispersal method in a hot bath.

On the Temple balm: I love the sleepy one, and it works pretty well on me. I put it on my wrists (since I sleep with my hands near my face) and also behind my jaw/under my ear, right under my nose, or on the pulsepoints of my neck, depending on mood.)

It doesn't quite knock me out and make me sleep well, but it helps quite a bit. (For 'knock me out so I stay slept', I use the Waving, not Drowning bath ballistic, which is the only ballistic I consider a Must Keep In Stock For Practical Use. The others are for fun and luxury.))

Oh, I'm so glad it was a pleasant experience, and not as scary-smelling as you'd feared.

I'll second the massage bars - I've never actually had a massage with one, but they're lovely all-over moisturizers. And if you like rich, creamy soap-like things, the buttercreams are very nice, too.

I had never thought of using them for that, but thats a good idea! I must go get some. Ooops just stocked up last week and all.

For [livejournal.com profile] ailbhe butterballs are great for getting paint off you - I've used a few lately.

I don't tend to get these "dreams" at night but during the day time. Lots of scary scenarios which involve my daughter getting maimed, mauled, or murdered. They have also kept me awake at night.

What keeps me sane is Naomi Stadlen's book - she says that it's a normal reaction, sort of checking whether the world is safe for baby, making sure you are taking extra care.

Still, it's extremely scary ...

I tend to avoid strong-smelling LUSH stuff but Butterballs are one of my most favourite products :-)

Heh. My eldest liked bath-bombs when he was more ickle. Mostly because of the fizzing, I think :)

I like Butterball, but I'm a huge fan of the ones with glitter in because now and again I like to sparkle!

Good luck to Rob for today.

I've never tried Lush products, though I walked past the shop in Leicester while visiting last month and I know what you all mean...

It occurs to me that Lush is what the Body Shop was 15-20 years ago.

Oooops. I do hope that doesn't sound terribly patronising, as it wasn't meant to. It's just a thought. I wondered if anyone else thought so too.

Lush is what the Body Shop was 15-20 years ago.

It's supposed to be - the founders are former Body Shop employees who didn't like its increasing commercialisation. Not that I think they do much better themselves, mind you.

ah, that makes perfect sense ;-)

I had a feeling I should know who you are so I looked at your lj. I don't think I do, but I did discover that you live in the same area as my grandfather-in-law. So it wasn't entirely wasted.
