Better days

On Monday this week we nearly all went horribly wrong, but not quite. In total, three sets of bedding required washing, which is A Bit Much. The low point of the day resulted in me demanding that Linnea sit on the stairs until she was calmer. She did, mind you; either I terrified her or she felt unusually compliant.

While she was there she started reading a biography of Harriet Tubman and after a while I read some of it with her. Then she went on reading while Emer and I assembled the cold frame in the garden. All three of us did a lot of sewing, between other things, and I made Emer a sewing kit like the one I made for Linnea on Saturday night.

Today we did the cleaning (oh my GOD the kitchen was HORRIFIC) and then went out to the library; both the big girls scootered. I met a friend there and arranged to meet her and her three children on Monday. After that we went to the charity shops and failed to replace the glasses we've broken since I last charity-shopped, and popped in to Londis to buy some cakes and then visited Maria, which was lovely.

While there I tripped - I think on my lovely new trousers from Nomads Clothing, which I will shorten before I wear them again - and dropped Astrid on the floor. I landed hard myself, and hurt my knees, wrists, the heels of my hands, and my big toe on one foot (I think the one I tripped from). Apparently I kept an arm around Astrid until the last microsecond, when I put my hands out to stop myself from crushing her as I fell. She appears totally unaffected, so may have landed on the edge of a pair of canvas shoes and a cardigan rather than on the floorboards; I picked her up too quickly to have made a proper assessment. Then Maria fed me chocolate until I could stand up myself, and I moved to a sofa. We did pupil checks and looked for marks on her head and could find nothing, and she also seems fine this evening, so I think it's all ok.

I ache a bit though, and I'm really, really tired and not up to eating much. Her face receding from me - I wasn't sure I hadn't thrown her away from me as I fell, even.

But the big girls had a lovely evening at home - Linnea wrote some letters to her cousins, and I read them their library books, and they went to bed beautifully.

And Rob has taken tomorrow off work so we can go and visit his parents.

How utterly terrifying for you! I'm so glad she was fine, although I bet she was nearly as scared as you were.

Also glad to hear Linnea found sitting on the stairs and reading helped her calm down.
