I wish I believed in smacking. It would be so much more satisfying than teaching that hitting is wrong, in the short term.

Yep. I've said it before, too -- it would be easier to hold the line against hitting if I didn't have the strong suspicion that it *works*. (That is, it modifies behavior. I'm sure I don't have to tell you I think it also works to damage kids, etc., but I surely empathize with a deep desire to assert my power and modify the damn behavior.)
