Emer got a pair of sunglasses tangled in her hair so Linnea cut them out. Emer now has no curls at all. Her hair had just reached a stage of curly manageability and now, after the very first trim or haircut of her entire life, it's going to be back to fine, straight, flyaway matting hair. And we need to work out how to shingle the back or something.

Without stabbing the child in the neck with a scissors.

Now, she has been offered haircuts. Every single time a child complains while getting their hair brushed, they are offered a haircut. And sometimes if we just happen to pass a hairdresser that will do children's hair for a fiver or so.

And she has refused, sometimes screaming at the very idea, every time.

And now she has no curls at all.

And it's not because she cut her own hair, it's because Linnea did it. To disentangle sunglasses.

Linnea has been sent to bed so that I don't defenestrate her. Emer is sitting outside my bedroom door sulking. I'm sitting in bed sulking. And contracting. I got less than four hours' sleep last night, which isn't helping, and I am in not inconsiderable pain and discomfort.

Luckily, a friend who is not emotionally invested and who IS good at cutting children's hair will come over with a sharp scissors later on and help us fix at least some of the damage.

And I'll get over it. I just hope we have some recent photos of the curls. I'd hate them to be gone without record. I know we've no record of her long long curly ponytail.

Oh deary deary me... =( Screaming fits at hair-brushing time are no joke, I fully sympathise! Sulking at them both is the least you should feel yourself entitled to, especially when there's another sibling poking you from the inside... Three against one is No Fair!

I realise the timing is likely to be abismal, but seeing as I will be in Reading tomorrow evening, do you think it would be OK for me to drop by at about 7pm with some hugs, sympathy, orthopeadic shoes and potentially your body weight in chocolate?

I am meeting a friend at 8pm for dinner, so it was not going to be a long visit - working ont he assumption that Ailbhe isn't really up for one of those right now. If two visitors are not substantially more complicated than one, how about I shout you when I know which train I'm on and we can meet up in town?

I'm sorry, there was a preface of "Of course, it would so lovely to see you!" that somehow didn't make it past the thinking stage.

Seems like a reasonable plan.
