Emer's toothbrush is blue. Linnea's toothbrush is pink. They are both Aquafresh brand animal toothbrushes, with animal-head-shaped bristle covers and suction-cup feet at the bottom to stick them to the back of the sink. They were a special treat, upgrade from cheap own-brand boring toothbrushes.

Emer's is a hippo. Linnea's is a cat.

Emer's hippo body has two human-shaped hippo arms molded down the sides of the toothbrush handle, one hand raised in a thumbs-up gesture.

Linnea's cat's body has two human-shaped cat arms molded down the sides of the toothbrush handle, ending in two hands caressing a kitten which is molded onto the toothbrush handle to be sitting at the big cat's feet. There's a bow on the kitten, too.

This stuff? Doesn't end.

Maybe it will end, if people like you (and me, if I have children) keep buying the wrong colours for the 'wrong' children.

My son has the pink one. Pink is his favourite colour (so he informs me). My daughter's favourite colour is no longer pink as "everyone else likes pink".

I may be doing somthing right...

Charles asked for his bedroom to be repainted pink last night. I felt proud.

When even toothbrushes are gendered, there's a problem. :o/

Lego-clones are gendered. o.O !!!

I went to a ToysRUs the other day, and every.thing.is.gendered.

Ailbhe's toothbrush find is at least a little hopeful, because the boy-brush isn't aggressively violent. But that's compared to the average "boys are into guns/cars/heavy equipment" trope.

Eugh.

I have a pink-loving son, too. It's his favorite color. Probably because he's heard me saying, "I don't like pink" a lot.

my small boy spent a large chunk of today wandering around wearing dark blue shorts, a bright red Fireman Sam t-shirt and sparkly pink fairy wings. If things come in pink that's the colour he wants. When buying his winter overcoat last year I did decide that I'd have to draw the line at "fushia pink" since he'll have to wear it this year after he's started school. But it's amazing how many people have looked at the "Paddington Bear Red" duffle coat and made comments about "your daughter"!!!!

I do, however, completely refuse to buy (or let him wear) things that are camouflage or with "daddy's little monster" or "here comes trouble" emblazened on them.

I don't buy that stuff either (Oliver's hat is sort of camouflage, but it's green and blue and *also* has a kind of flowery pattern, so I reckon we win there).
