Ours is stacked in rolls in the shadiest part of the garden.

Rob has been digging up our lawn and sorting the topsoil from the grass yuk and putting it in bags for people, and tomorrow we - he, because I'm not allowed - has to finish the bit under the swing and dig over the whole thing to turn the soil and I might be allowed to rake it a bit to level it and then he will have to tread it down and then we put in fertiliser and roll out the new grass and water it like mad.

Apparently we have to use the entire waterbutt and then some. We'll probably end up using the hose but we might manage some bathwater etc. I wish we had a proper greywater system in our house.

Freeglers are taking the spare topsoil, the pallet the turf was delivered on, and all sorts. It's very exciting.

And then we won't have a mudpit where we wanted a garden, which will be great.

But we will always have a bare patch under the swing, I think - I can't imagine any other way.

Maybe put down bark chips under the swing? We've had to do that in front of our shed, where going in and out every day in winter means the grass just can't survive.

bark chips? It's what they used in the playground when I was not-quite-a-kid. Cause, you know, when I was a kid we had proper playgrounds, with 20ft tall slides that had no real sides on, and concrete floors. And a witches' hat.

Under the swing is definitely supposed to have a bare patch! Ours always did, anyway. :-)

Your grass sounds lovely.

Bill wanted to move the swingset because it would make a bare patch. Oh, so how many bare patches do you want? It stayed in the same place.

the challenge was always to avoid getting our shoes muddy in the puddle under the swing. My mum did not like mud, especially on her daughter.

I think the saddest thing is that Bill's parents never got him a swingset. All kids who have a garden should have a swing. It should be a rule. And if he'd had a swingset, he would unnerstand the bare patch.

or get some plastic or rubberised matting to put where the bare patch might develop. Something a bit like an outside doormat. The grass would grow through it, but the mesh protect the grass roots
