Linnea really really REALLY REALLY likes babies and toddlers like REALLY and we practically OWE it to her to get her a new baby sibling at the shop this week. Milk, bread, carrots, birthday candles, baby sibling. Right. She's a serious risk for deciding to go home with other families just because they have a baby. (Emer can take or leave them, most of the time; I asked "Will we get a new baby?" and she said "No, fellafint.")

Emer is learning to count and taking an interest in "What dis word say?" - on the second Hemse day (Sunday?) she was counting "One two three one two," when given five objects, and today on the ferry she counted steps as she walked down them; she and I were going to find Rob and Linnea after watching the army training helicopter rescue thing. Emer counted "One hoo hee fhour hive hix wevven eight." I performing-sealed her for the next set though, because I started counting on the top step, and she counted 12312378 instead, while - this part I love - looking up at me and smirking.

I think it's more that last time she ended with 7-8, so she ended it that way this time too. At least, I hope so. One porridgey is enough.

*g* - but your alternative explanation is more porridgey, than beckyl's: it involves emer's looking ahead to see the steps end in two further steps' time, and subtracting the two from the remembered eight, in time to mentally re-number the second three "six", in time to announce the penultimate step, "seven"...

but fear not; it's more likely that emer kept the counting rhythm going in her head, and was neither multiplying, nor predictively subtracting.

but bear in mind, you're providing emer and linnea with more attention, challenges, feedback, encouragement, friendship and love, more of the time, than most kids get, most of the day, most of the week - and they're helping each other, too. who wouldn't learn more, faster, in such a setting - and delight in doing so?
