I'm just working through making our reservations, because Rob has booked his leave and the tickets are now available for some legs of the journey (some of the train tickets aren't available for another week or so) and it looks like we might have to stay in a hotel in Copenhagen overnight en route... to save money.

We'll probably spend what we save on food, but OH THE HARDSHIP of having to stay in a hotel for a night and take the girls on a walk through Copenhagen in the morning before the train leaves! Our life is so difficult PITY US!

I am, as you might be able to tell, delighted with this, as we were already trying to work out how we could have a family holiday in Copenhagen some other time, and an 18-hour stopover would be a nice taster.

We'll leave our house about 8 am Sunday 5 April and return about 4 pm Friday 17 April. We'll have five days without travelling on Gotland, and two days without travelling in Oskarshamn. Because the international ferry is more like a hotel than train, I don't count that as active travelling time.

Day 1 6 hours travelling, then lovely ferry
Day 2 4 hours travelling, then hotel
Day 3 10 hours travelling, plus getting from the ferry on Gotland to our beds after midnight!!!
Days 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 Visiting on Gotland
Day 9 4 hours travelling
Days 10, 11 Visiting in Oskarshamn
Day 12 12 Hours travelling, then lovely ferry
Day 13 4 hours travelling, then home!

The nice thing about this is that the longest section is only slightly longer than the trips we make to see my family in Ireland, and the shorter sections are all much shorter. There's a small amount of bus travel, so we've timed that for times the children are likely to easily fall asleep, and there's no two sections of road-travel in a row, so there shouldn't be any cumulative sickness to deal with, and the travel sickness pills they get are usually good for one short trip, which is all they have to deal with at any time, here. I think they will arrive tired but not sick, which is good. In the summer we made two short car-journeys in a row the day after a bus journey, and Linnea was sick for days. It was hideous and spoiled my little sister's wedding for us as well as the rest of the holiday. She cried and begged us not to put her in a car on the way home, too, which was heartbreaking.

I quite enjoyed all the "spare" time I've had in Copenhagen (once a few hours changing from one train to another; once in the evening while being in Denmark for work purposes), but as the time was fairly brief, I can't really poiint anything out as being especially more worth seeing than anything else.

Advisory: If you want to get any sleep, DO NOT stay at the hotel at the train station. BTDT.

It is "conveniently" located right next to the main terminal, directly over where the tracks make a turn, on steel piers down to ground which carry every small sound up to every level of the hotel. Every time a train pulls in around the curve there is an incredibly loud screeching from the tracks. All.night.long.

There are quite a few hotels within walking distance. I'd recommend any of those. Copenhagen is a fun city to walk through.

I used to have things called "travel bands" which worked on the principle of acupressure for my kids when they were young. They seemed to work. We *loved* the ferries to Scandinavia - we always chose to eat at the Smorgasbord restaurant and never the cafeteria as small children were not charged at all and could sample as many different dishes as it took to get them well fed. Even slightly larger children ate half price and it really was better value than eating at the cafeteria where you pay for each dish even if the kids don't like it. We used to be able to get a ferry from Newcastle, but I don't think they run any more. We were usually headed to Norway or Sweden, so Gothenburg was our usual point of entry. I'm not nearly so familiar with Copenhagen, though I think we did go there once. Is Legoland a possible place to visit? My kids were a bit older and loved it - it may be that yours are still a bit young for it though. Hope you have a wonderful time!
