What's she doing, consciously building a self? I didn't try that until I was 14.

I was wondering how the sue visit was panning out in the aftermath.

Perhaps she's finding out what it's like to have a point of view not her own, to be able to guess at her own social image and how she compares to others? That whole 'theory of mind' thing.

Huh, I was 14 when I did that too. I did it in response to brand new feelings of social inadequacy and the realization that I wouldn't want to be my friend so of course no one else would either; she seems awfully young for thoughts like that, but maybe not.

When I was 14 I realised that I could safely alter the person I presented to the rest of the world, and since I didn't like who I'd been up to that point, I tried to work out the bits I did want to be. It more or less worked. Certainly I was happier and more popular.

She does seem to be deciding who to be from a range of options. I'm not at all sure why.

I did it for the first time at 4, when we were preparing to move to Germany and I didn't want to, but also didn't want to upset my parents. Well, semi-consciously, anyway.
