Swimming

Linnea had her first swimming lesson with other children today, which was great. She is much more inclined to follow the teacher's direction if other people have to too, and it's far less dull for her if she's not the only one in the water.

We walked there for just before ten am, in spite of a series of biological events at 9:30, and I had the foresight to put Linnea's suit on under her trousers so her changing was quick.

Emer and I went swimming in the other pool while the lesson was on and Emer insisted on standing on my back, so I let go of her and she went under. Cue horror from the other mums and seriosu concern from the lifeguard. I, callous coldhearted sadistic wretch that I am, watched her come belly-up to the surface, face ballooned out just like when she was a newborn, with the don't-breathe-the-water reflex all babies have; the lips purse up and the nose just stops, and the air already in their lungs brings them up to the surface, face-up. It's fascinating. They lose it after a certain amount of time if they are not submerged a bit.

Anyway, I assured everyone she was ok, and she obviously was, but I am not at all sure any of them don't think I'm a hijjus abuser.

Linnea's new teacher and the other parents were very impressed with her ability to swim. I was annoyed that almost as soon as I'd promised Linnea 10 minutes more in the pool Emer insisted on running at the poolside, after being told not to, so we had to all get out and go home.

After swimming we walked to town to a cash machine and then Linnea wanted to get a sandwich at the deli ("Sometimes we just shop there but sometimes we have sandwiches and sit down," was her description) so we did that and because all the plain brown baps were pre-buttered we got an upgrade to a fancy brown roll for free. Then we walked home - or rather, Linnea and I walked, Emer went on my back for that bit - via Moondog, where we had coffee and squash and cake and I think we're going to plan another slingmeet.

We shared a very, very hard pear, too. A juicy, crispy Conference pear. Most peculiar. Tasted great though.

Linnea found a pound on the footpath and we are going to spend it in a charity shop soon. She's getting better at money. It's time for another family decision on pocketmoney, I think.

And now I have no further excuses not to deal with the laundry. Again. And descaling the showerhead with vinegar.
