Yesterday we got up and dressed, and Mum packed her bags, and we went out. We got the train to town, and went to Picnic for lunch, where for the first time ever I had no choice of non-dairy meals and the non-dairy option was one I didn't particularly like. It was still perfectly passable, so everyone else ate things they actually did like and we all had macaroons for dessert. After lunch we went to the theatre (South Street, just outside the very middle of town); they were sold out and we only had three prebooked seats, so the children and I went in and Mum went off to browse through the shops in the town centre.

We were going to see The Princess and the Pea. We met with someone we used to know at Tiggers Toddlers, years ago, in the waiting area, and sat by them for the show. It was fabulous. There was one woman operating the puppets, like last time, and someone else on lights, but she also narrated the story and acted a bit - live action and puppetry and lights and storytelling, all in one. It was brilliant. The set was lovely. It started very slowly and got the children's attentions a little at a time, and then held it, except for the ones who couldn't see properly, until the end. We had good seats and Emer and Linnea were delighted throughout. They particularly liked the Princess' disturbed sleep when the pea (a green light) grew to enormous proportions and bounced all over the room.

After the show, we were all allowed to troop through to the waiting area and view the original Pea, in a special case, through a tiny peephole. It was of almost religious significance to some of the children there. Srs bsns.

Then Linnea and Emer and I met up with Mum again, and I took them to John Lewis to get the fit of their shoes double-checked. Their shoes are fine, so whatever is making their toes curly isn't that.

We came home on the bus and I fell asleep in the armchair. Mum cooked pasta and ratatouille from a tin for a sort of dinner, and we ate it just before she left. Rob came home in time to snaffle about half a portion, and to say goodbye, so that was nice.

It was a very very good day - busy and exhausting, but very good.
