Emer coughed herself copiously sick. Rob's cough is now quite mild until he stands up and walks. Linnea's almost back to normal. I'm fine apart from a burning feeling where the infection is trying to take hold in my chest.

So I've dug out the vitamins and the echinacea, and given the children their doses (15 drops in a cup of juice) and taken mine (5ml, do not take while lactating, which I ignored because hello, I gave it to Emer direct). I've had a double dose of vitamins, which I intend to do for a couple of days or so, and I'm trying to work out what the deal is with children's vitamins.

Our diet is good, but clearly it's missing SOMETHING, or we wouldn't all get every bug that everyone else gets. But when we get them they seem to hang around more and limit us more - I won't take Linnea swimming at thepublic pool with other children if she's coughing, for example - so we need to get it sorted out.

I seem to remember a vitamin juice drink we had for a while when we were kids, called something like Floradix - I could add the echinacea to that. And the laudanum.

I take Floradix liquid iron+vitamin supplement (10ml twice a day, though I take it once a day, mostly, because I have no memory) & it's very good. And actively tastes nice. That might be what you were thinking of? Damn expensive though :-/

Vit C? I got prescribed orange juice by the doctor as a sickly tiny.

The one my mum used to feed us was called Minadex, and I remember Halib orange tablets too. I absolutely loved the taste of both! We weren't ill particularly often as children, but whether that had anything to do with it I have no idea!

This probably doesn't apply because you're a very social family, but there's research out there that says that kids who don't go to nursery/playgroup a lot are more susceptible to bugs because they don't build up immunity. Like I say, probably not applicable in your case...

Wendy Jones (BfN pharmacist) specifically says that echinacea containing products can be taken whilst lactating.

Actually, as I understand it, it's yet more government/legal idiocies. Unless a drug is specifically tested in pregnant/lactating women they have to say not to take it.

Some drugs which you can give to the child might not be advisable for a lactating woman as they could have an adverse effect on quantity of milk.
