Glorious girls
Jan. 4th, 2008 03:51 pmWe went to Sweet Masala for lunch! They are not quite closed down, though they really look pretty shabby now, and they are still incredibly cheap. The three of us shared a thali - chickpea curry, potato curry, rice, naan, popadoms, and a bhaji - and the guy who cooked it was very surprised to see the children wolfing it down. "It's too spicy?" he kept saying, but it wasn't, and the loved it. Linnea was ecstatic to get popadoms again, and then he put on a CD and she danced in her chair, and eventually she got down off her chair and danced on the floor, to the proprietor's applause.
Emer danced in her chair too, and kept asking me to carry her over the counter so she could say hello, and then back to the table to eat some more.
We shopped as best we could, but the co-op had almost no fresh fruit and veg. Nor did they have biodegradable bin-liners, so I took biodegradable carrier bags instead of using my own bags. Luckily the other co-op opens on Tuesday after the Christmas holidays so I can get things then. I did buy something for the birthday presents. And tomorrow morning is the Farmers' Market.
The four-year-old's gift is assembled, as per his mother's instructions - no Stuff, maybe art things, nothing that won't get used up pretty quickly, and keep it small.
So. It's a clear plastic pencil case, containing a small set of paints (the solid kind you need to wet) and a brush, about 10 post-it sized sheets of coloured paper, three crayons, four inch-long bits of plasticine, 52 alphabet stickers, 9 butterfly stickers, some thin slices of scrubby sponge for painting with (texture differences!), a googly eye, and two small seashells. I think that's it. It does not contain glue because I couldn't think how to get glue into the pencil case; I may put some in a separate bottle if I can find a nice tiny one but I have none small enough at home. There are a couple of A5 bits of coloured corrugated card, too. It's a travel art kit. I might make some up for the next time I take my kids camping in bad weather. If I find a small pad of blank white paper I'll put that in too but I was looking yesterday and today and couldn't find anything appropriate.
I got the idea from friend A who did something similar but larger for Linnea's third birthday. All the bits are gone now but we still find the box occasionally.
When we got home we found that the meat delivery had arrived. We're having sausages for tea, and will probably spend Sunday cooking for the freezer. It's all in the freezer now, in case we don't.
We're also having broccoli for tea, because Linnea refused to walk past the broccoli display at the co-op.
Emer is dismantling a bunch of grapes and laying them out precisely according to some inner pattern. So far it looks like some kind of mandala.
And I? Am going to make tea.

My 2 won't eat spicy food, you're lucky. Even Holly won't & she'll eat most things.

Date: 2008-01-04 05:17 pm (UTC)Kate likes buying the little cars, but it's only Woolies that sell them locally & they only get 1 box in at a time. She manages to buy about 1 or 2 of them, before they are all sold. I even ordered her one from amazon with another order, but it ended up being out of stock.
