So now all the visual stuff in the front room is unplugged, so we're no longer paying for standby. It annoys me that none of it has an off switch - the buttons are for on or standby, and off is only doable at the actual plug.

Rob is working on getting a storage unit into the attic so that we can keep working on getting that sorted out.

I've also managed to make a loaf of white bread with a nice soft top crust. If I can transfer the skill to wholemeal I will be very pleased.

If the plug is hard to reach or you want another "Off" solution, try one of those short multiple extension cords often sold for computer use, that have an inline on-off switch.

My new (ish) CD player in the kitchen only has a standby switch. I wouldn't have bought it if I'd realised. We turn the tv off properly each time (I enforced that one & now everyone does it on autopilot) & we turn off the DVD & video players. The freeview must stay on though, I don't even know where the switch on the actual box is as I tried to re-boot it yesterday as it wasn't working & there was no switch. I used the remote in the end.

Eve magazine last month had an article on women who ran eco-friendly businesses & there is apparently a woman in Pontefract (where we live) who sells some sort of electricity measuring device to see how much you use each day.
