Implantation

Tomorrow at 08:30 I get a little plastic tube full of hormones inserted into my upper arm. This is the result of extensive conversation with my GP, whom I adore, about whim-proof contraception.

It's not that I have an overpowering urge to have sex and might get pregnant accidentally. It's that I have an overpowering urge to get pregnant and might have sex accidentally. We laughingly dismissed condoms and pills as clearly utterly useless for my purposes, and briefly considered the injection until we realised that it doesn't last long enough. For a while coils looked plausible, but the doctor pointed out that given what I managed in order to get pregnant last time, the brief pain of removing the coil myself in the bath was well within my means to endure. But she couldn't see me hacking out the implant with the breadknife.

I'm quite looking forward to the solitary walk to the doctor, and waiting all alone in the waiting room. I wonder what they have to read for the over-fives?

I don't know if the implant is the same stuff as the injection, and I know these things don't affect everyone the same way, but the injection made me mad as a porridge-knife for 6 months, and the damn stuff only lasts three. It was like constant PMT, mood swings all over the place... and there was a patch in there where I kept dreaming I was looking after a small baby. Worth bearing in mind if you do start feeling odd that it might be that. It probably settles down after a while, and I'd expect the different delivery method probably means that there's less weirdness flying about the system at any one time so the effects would be less. Thought it was worth mentioning though.

The arm implant is meant to be more like what's in the coil I've got (Mirena). I'm sorry I ever thought that Depo was a good thing. I didn't realise how bitchy it made me or mad and don't get me started on how it screwed up my periods!

Oh my sweet and fluffy lord, "mad as a porridge-knife" describes me on Depo as well! I could, however, sing the praises of Mirena to the skies. If the implant (which we can't get here) works half as well for Ailbhe as Mirena has for me, it's going to be a very good thing indeed.

I also hope you are one of the lucky women who get reduced or no period pains or even periods. I am on Mirena, and was on Depo-Provera.

i hope it works out for you. the implant is a better choice than depo, because you can have the implant taken out and you'll get back to normal in a few weeks or so. the depo lasts as long as it lasts, and that's different with everyone.

i have tried both, and neither worked, but at least i could have the implant taken back out. (i did have to argue with the quacks to get it out, but it was doable)
