I am getting better at responding to offensive-to-me questions about the prices of my possessions. I was raised in an environment where such a question would not be asked unless it were relevant, so I had no ready response.

Now I've found one. "I can't quite remember."

This is especially useful when answering people who want to know so that they can judge my judgment for my own good. Yay!

That is a question I would only ask if I wanted to acquire a similar object of my own and was trying to budget.

Indeed. When we bought our house a while back, we got a couple of impertinent questions about how much it was (well, OK if you're househunting and want a ballpark figure) and what percentage of it we actually owned (pushing it more than a little).

The answer was "enough to feel comfortable".

The thing is, I'm often happy to talk about that kind of thing, in a geeking "look how this is organised" kind of way, but that's not often the motive behind this kind of question.
