This week I ate beef on Friday, Thursday, Wednesday, and Tuesday. I'm not doing well on it.

It takes me a while to get used to eating meat every day, but no time at all to get used to leaving it out.

Emer is eating something at every meal now. Bits of our food. She enjoys spoonfeeding herself but hasn't worked out how to get the food off the plate onto the spoon.

I can't handle the news of the search for the missing three-year-old in the Algarve.

I can't handle the news of the missing three-year-old either: I'm torn between worry about the child and sympathy for the parents - - and then thinking that fifty yards away in another building is TOO FAR AWAY to leave your small children, even for half an hour and even if they're asleep - Oh, I hope the little girl is all right. and you know, I can't help thinking: do we need to know this?

Might stop it happening to somebody else.

It was just about the first news I heard after we got off the plane and my heart skipped a beat.

Beef for anaemia?

See, I don't think so. It now seems that this was a premediated kidnapping to order.

I find eating meat every day very hard. If I try, I end up eating little or nothing at meals for a day or two.

There are a few exceptions. When I'm in China, I'll happily take meat dishes as part of the selection every day. But the food there is so varied and so good, so that's really very different.

When I'm somewhere very cold (Spitzbergen, say, really Arctic climate) I crave heavy food. Lots of berries, a good deal of sugar, fat, and meat.

What's so awful about this is that all of us make errors of judgment sometimes - nobody is hypervigilant all the time, and at some point you have to relax. The girl's parents relaxed too early and too much. On the other hand, Elizabeth Smart was abducted from her bedroom at home; she was a preteen. There is no such thing as absolute safety, and it's a terrible thing to contemplate. The only things that keep me sane are:
- You live, you learn. I'm certainly far, far more cautious and circumspect than before. I have definitely been guilty of being too relaxed, and I am beating myself up for this mentally, albeit briefly, at least several times per day.
- Abductions such as this one are extremely, extremely rare.

Apart from that, I only know that were I in the mother's shoes, I'd be suicidal. They conceived their daughter after 5 years of infertility ...
