We have recently changed electricity and gas suppliers so that our electricity is from 100% renewable sources. And it appears that, on investigation, a water meter would cost us money, so we need to reduce water consumption a bit before we can afford to get one of those. That means fixing the shower, for a start. And the dripping tap in the bathroom. A modern dual-flush loo would help too.

I habitually run the tap when I brush my teeth with a conventional toothbrush, but not when I use an electric one. Isn't that odd?

We also really, really need to get the loft ceiled and insulated; it costs money in winter and makes the house stifling hot in summer.

Can't do nuffin while I'm like this though. Perhaps Rob can see to some of it while I'm away.

Actually the good news is that insulating the loft should help to keep the house cooler in summer as it reduces the amount of solar heat that gets in.

We have a mostly flat roof on our top floor (its a loft conversion) and had to replace the roofing as the original was leaking (they had done it originally with shed felt!) and at the same time we got insulation to current standards put in and it makes a real difference.

We need to get insulation in our house too. We are on really strict water restrictions because of the long term drought here at the moment. So we are rigging up to run grey water onto the garden as you arent allowed to water the garden now. We have a dual flush loo but I want to look into green electricity too. I am about to write a letter to the local council to see if they will collect recycleables more than once every two weeks as we fill the 240lt bin for recyclables in less than a week so we always have a pile waiting to be put out.

Wait till you've finished with nappies before metering!

We're metered, but I had the meter put in when I moved here in 98, long before offspring. We've been paying around £20 a month since the nappies started and I suspect that might go down now Jack's not in them except at night. Certainly the amount of laundry we do has reduced dramatically!

I need to look at changing the power suppliers, though.
