WHY isn't Livejournal emailing me comments? And before it stopped altogether, WHY was it sending blank "comments" emails with none of the comment text, only the lj links?
well, they were turning up sort-of ok for me - sometimes quite late - up 'til yesterday... it could be a glitch (tm); last time email comments went missing, it was a glitch that overloaded their automatic email system; there's[/has recently been?] a glitch in their automated email reminders to people who pay for their accounts by credit cards, sending out multiples of the things: this could easily've done something similar.
I've been getting the empty notifications as well - don't know what's up with that. As for them missing altogether, if it persists and other people aren't reporting the same problem, you should check that your ISP isn't blocking them as spam - it's often a user end problem.
They 'added functionality' to the comments about a month ago. You could opt to have comments in a thread also e-mailed rather than ust a reply to one of your comments. At this point I started getting a mixture of the blank comments (which are just annoying) and the normal ones.
Might be worth double checking your preferences for this, in case LJ has applied some sort of default settings you didn't actually want. They seem to have made a few Fubars of this type recently, based on some of the postings to LJ news.
