No sneezing
No laughing
No being kicked by the toddler
No lifting the toddler
No twisting
Really, no cha-cha-ing

Especially no sneezing. Now, how does one prevent a sneeze? I know how to hold my nose but it doesn't stop the abdominal muscles doing their thing.

(Also, I am faintly stressed that Rob hasn't called from work yet today. Perhaps he's busy.)

Have you tried rubbing the tip of your tongue as far back on the roof of your mouth as possible? Don't know why, but it seems to work for me. Can't remember where I heard it from either, now.

That's basically the one I use, but it doesn't have to be all that far back. As i recall, the wording of the original tip I read was "Tickle the roof of your mouth with your tongue."

The finger under the nose, mentioned in another comment, needs to puch both in and up.

I can usually prevent a sneeze by rubbing my nose quite hard when it starts to itch. A thwarted sneeze feels horrible but probably better than stressed stitches.

Mike recommends staring at the nearest lightbulb when you begin to feel a sneeze coming, god knows if it actually works :-)

Isn't that to bring on a sneeze that can't make its mind up, though, rather than to prevent one?

There's an acupressure point in-between your brows (just at the very top of your nose) and you can often stop a sneeze by applying pressure there.

You can't keep your eyes open while sneezing, so try keeping your eyes open. (I've always found this incredibly difficult, but in theory it works.)

I had a bad cold when Holly was 2 weeks old. The pain was awful & both ends of my scar came unstitched, which is partly why my scar has never healed properly. Be careful *hugs*

For me, pressing on the area between my nose and my upper lip often helps. (Basically, use your finger to make a Hitler-mustache, then push in.)

When Holden was born, I had a cough. I screamed myself completely hoarse in labour, and made the cough MUCH worse. The only thing I could do afterward to keep the stitches from popping was to press a pillow against them when I had to cough. Sometimes there was no pillow or blanket handy, so I'd just cover the incision with my hands and apply counterpressure. It helped. Still hurt like hell, but I didn't blow any stitches.
