Quick whinge

(1) It is absolutely appalling that the most pain I am in now is caused by Linnea's birth, not Emer's. I will stop taking codeine immediately. I spent over an hour shaking from pain yesterday evening, and slept incredibly badly because of it.

(2) Tandem feeding works well for us, though it's difficult to position both of them to feed together on my actual lap; in bed, Linnea snuggles up beside me and I hold Emer, and in an armchair Linnea stands on the floor and I hold Emer, but Linnea would like to be on my lap.

Engorgement, however, is much easier to deal with with a toddler. I'm leaking far less this time around. It's wonderful.

(3) I am starving to death. I can't eat enough.

I am so sorry that you are in pain. I'm taking a lot of codiene at the moment too, and not enjoying it at all, but of course it's all supposed to be in a good cause. Yesterday I decided to do without pain relief, and slept really badly because of that. Cue a day of shouting at the boys and being really impatient all round. Oh dear, I'm not helping, am I? I just felt a sudden surge of fellow feeling!

Out of sheer curiosity, how does it work feeding a newborn when you have a toddler who is still feeding? (genuine question, not getting at you, I've had friends of my own, many years ago, who did it, but I don't think I ever asked the questions) I'm wondering about things like colostrum - I guess the event of birth is enough to trigger that? I'm hazy about the hormones and how they influence and/or are influenced by pregnancy and birth, I have to admit. Does the newborn somehow get "priority" in terms of the composition of the milk? I think I remember that the milk one produces for a newborn is somehow different from the milk produced for a three month old baby, for example ... (If answering questions like this is a cause of stress or anxiety of any kind, please *don't answer the questions* - I mean it! Priority number one is you and the girls! My curiosity could always be answered by googling, I'm sure! Hope someone is on duty to feed you regularly! ;-)

The youngest baby gets priority bodywise, yes. In my case, Linnea has been noshing on dribbles of colostrum since early in the third trimester of pregnancy, and is now overjoyed at the luscious supply of milk. And you're wuite right that the composition of milk changes with the age of the most recent baby.

I found myself very hungry during pregnancy when I wasn't physically able to eat much. In the end, I identified the high calorie foods which I figured were most nutricious - avacardo, olive oil and honey being my favourites.

Is something like this useful for breastfeeding??

No, we are not :( We couldn't get an appointment to register Emer's birth early enough to actually obtain her passport before we left the country, and the hospital no longer does registrations for some reason. Bah, stompy feets. We couldn't have made an appointment before she was born, either.

However, we may well come for a visit *anyway* since we'll definitely be prioritising getting her passport. We just won't be coming As Planned.

I am well pissed off about it, too.

sorry, messed up last attempt to post, so I deleted it.
I must be being thick here. As you are in so much pain that you are shaking, why are you stopping taking the codeine?
I just can't imagine how hungry you must get nursing babe and toddler - has Sweet Masala applied for planning permission to extend yet?

The codeine is causing constipation, and the pain that is causing the injuries from Linnea's birth far, far outweighs the pain caused by the wound from Emer's birth. Clearer now?

***sympathy** I ate more than twice as much as normal just before the twins started solids, and I was still hungry. I think I was producing about six pints of milk a day.

I have found the same with Tandem nursing. I am losing more weight still.
