We slept late - it was amazing to wake in a house which wasn't chilly - and I surfaced very slowly indeed. Rob brought me coffee in bed, and toast with ginger jam. He and Emer went off to collect Linnea and go to the library before I was even out of bed. I read Unseen Academicals and drank coffee, then pottered around doing laundry and making beds and things.

When they came back we had lunch and I headed out to run some errands. I found a raincoat for Emer in the attic - hope it fits, she hasn't agreed to have it tried on yet - and asked Linnea whether she wanted to come to town with me to choose one or have me choose one for her, and she said "Get a red one with flowers," and I went to town on my own.

I went to Peacocks (where I've never been before) and Monsoon and BHS and Mothercare and Jackson's and H&M and TK Maxx and John Lewis and the Early Learning Centre (umbrellas but no raincoats) and M&S and I forget where else. Eventually I found a red rain jacket in Altimus, on sale, in the brand all the all-in-one suits were in, so it will handmedown nicely. Elsewhere there were showerproof (no good at all to us, her wool coat is showerproof!) or pink, purple, black with flowers (srsly), orange with spots... red raincoats are not In right now.

She's delighted with the one we got though, which is what counts, at least to me.

I also got myself a red shiny rainhat in John Lewis and some Red Tulip fabric dye in Fabricland, where I saw various water-resistant looking fabrics which I think would make a LOVELY raincoat if I can work out how. It would need to be lined, of course. And then I went to Moondogs and had a coffee, and then I came home and put henna in my hair (I still have some of the henna I bought before Linnea was born) and put jeans and cushion covers in the wash to be dyed red, and now they are spinning around and my head is wrapped in cling film.

Linnea had a lovely time away and didn't miss me in the least, and I missed her like a limb - one reason I couldn't run errands in the morning is I couldn't leave until I'd seen her again, and she was off to the library.

Tomorrow I'll be taking my new hair to Meeting. It's a shared lunch; we need to decide on some food to bring. And after that, the Steam Fair.
