I have just discovered that some books I read as a child were by Gene Stratton-Porter and appear to be very hard to get in the UK (we all know what "limited availability" means to Amazon, don't we?) so I'd like someone else to do my thinking for me.

"Girl of the Limberlost", "The Keeper of Bees," and "The Magic Garden" are the ones I'm most interested in - and I'm not sure that "The Magic Garden is the one I think it is so a plot summary would be nice.

There are quite a few British sellers on there now.
Sellers will usually answer questions about books too.

I did and probably still have a copy of 'Girl of the Limberlost' if I can find it, do you want it because I am unlikely to read it again...

I am visiting my mum tomorrow and can see if it's survived my sister's purges.

Okay, will add to the ToDo list at my mum's tomorrow night. I want to rescue more of my books anyway either to give away or keep at my house.

I *adored* Gene Stratton-Porter as a child. My favorite was "Her Father's Daughter". Unreadable now, alas. (I tried. And shuddered.)

I see someone else has stepped up to the plate with "Girl of the Limberlost". I've got an extra "Keeper of the Bees" for you, soon as I unpack my general fiction (will realistically be at least a few more months).

Have you been here? Indispensable local color.

I second this recommendation. But it is dangerous, I keep buying books!

If you think "the magic garden" is "the secret garden", it probably isn't. :-)

It's definitely as good as you remember :-) I still re-read my ancient copy pretty often - in fact you have inspired me to get it out again, as soon as I have finished the Bill Bryson I'm on at the moment.

Can you email me your address to barakta@barakta.org.uk and I'll post you the book.

I found it in my boxes and was inspired to sort them so my mum has some more space :)

I'm not going to volunteer right now, but I'll be keeping my eyes open for these for you. I seem to recall a whole stack of Stratton-Porter coming into the library booksale last year (I priced them fairly cheaply, too). Bookseller geeking: Stratton-Porter, as I recall, wrote her very popular fiction (_Limberlost_ is the most well-known) with an understanding with her publisher that they would publish her non-fiction works - the stuff she preferred to write - too (alternately with the fiction I seem to recall).

Good stuff, eh? I've never actually read any....

If it's any use, Project Gutenberg has a lot of Stratton Porter's stuff up, including Girl of the Limberlost and another Limberlost book.
