Stealth migraine!

You know a migraine is not too bad when you only diagnose it for sure on day 5 and it's almost gone by day 7. However, I did prefer not having any migraines at all...

Things are, over all, looking up. Over the weekend, we went to Kew Gardens with three other two-parent-one-infant families. We had a picnic in the cold and saw things in glass houses and fish in glass tanks and a ray of some sort (manta ray! manta ray! all rays make me think of manta rays - I think there was one in a book I read as a child) and had tea and it was very civilised and pleasant and Linnea had a fabulous time.

We also cleared up a chunk of the garden. Ellie and Andy came over and galvanised Rob into action in re: the leaky toilet cistern; they bought the necessary part at Wickes and fitted it, and now it leaks no more, so the patio is habitable and Linnea can play in the garden without danger of mouldy puddles. So I mowed the lawn and Rob excavated some of the compost bin to add to a flowerbed we're trying ot get rid of, and he uprooted the lemon verbena and it's in a pot now, and I hope it stays there, virulent thing.

And we ate a fantastic roast chicken dinner which tasted good enough to be a venial sin, at least, and resulted in lots of wonderful leftovers.

We have yellow flowers from Supermouse (Ellie said they are freesias, but I wouldn't know, they're lovely and yellow and blooming beautifully) and a houseful of pot-plants which are not yet dead. I'm amazed at my newfound ability to not kill plants.

And I accidentally bought Linnea some more birthday presents. I'm sure she'll cope.

New method of manipulation: When I need her, I call out "Where's Linnea?" in the hide-and-seek tone of voice. Works every time she has nothing more interesting to do. New trick: Eats things out of pots or bowls, or sticky things off plates (she holds the plate at an angle, so sliced cucumber stays on but cold peas do not). She still can't feed herself with a spoon unless we load the spoon up for her, though. Oh, and she's in the largest pre-potty-training size of nappies. I hope she's an early potty-trainer. I really do. Otherwise it's terries and plastic pants and all the nappy rash associated with those... Or possibly adult incontinence pants. That's a possibility.

Time to have a shower and wash my hair, and then a bubble bath! Hurrah for bubbles!

Cloth nappies have come a long way since terries. We very very rarely have nappy rash (probably 3 times ever), and have always used cloth with pretty waterproof wraps.

Oh, disposables come large enough, it's just that the various cloth ones we use (mainly cotton bottoms) max out at her current size. Now, she's only just in the largest size, so it should take a while to grow out of them, but...

We have never routinely used disposables, though we do use them for more than overnight travel. It didn't occur to me to use disposables until antenatal classes when the questions "Will you breast or bottle feed?" and "will you use cloth or disposable nappies?" came up... I strongly suspect my mother of being a closet hippie.

Are you still using the nappy service or have you started buying your own? Several of the nappy makers will make nappies to fit e.g. minkis (www.nappiesbyminki.co.uk) or if you just want wraps try scallywraps (http://www.scallywraps.wahmall.co.uk/shop/) where the large wraps claim to fit up to 40lbs.

Up to 40lbs sounds good - that should bring us to 30 months, if she sticks to her growth curve (which she has, so far, like glue). She may be ready for potty training by then.

Have a look at www.plushpants.com - they've got Totsbots polyester wraps that go from 30lbs; Popowraps and Vento wraps (also polyester) from 35lbs; Totsbots fleece wraps (there's a fantastic rainbow one) from 30lbs. Motherease all-in-ones and Sandy's are expensive but their last size is 35lbs+ and the Popolino one size managed to be fitted over the website's owner's 4.5yo, 35lb daughter when she was wearing shorts...

Linnea is currently in 30lb+ nappies. Which fit beautifully, but given her age, I have cause for some concern... We'll investigate the 35lb+ ones for sure.

Really, she's just too big. I shall have to send her back.

I forgot to say, we stopped using the nappy service very quickly, as they charged more for larger nappies (we needed size 2 nappies in newborn quantities). We have a cotton bottoms birth to potty pack supplemented with various Occasional Purchases, and disposables at night at the moment - she's in one of her Heavy Wetting phases but seems to be coming out of it.

I *hope* she'll be dry before then, but I have no guarantees... She's tooo biiiiig. I'm having trouble finding the next size of vests; she's almost 12 months, so she needs 2-3 years snap-at-the-crotch vests. And they're hard to find.

Yay migraine just about gone away!

And yay for rays, too -- they've always been my very favourite kind of fish.

And yay for toilet cisterns that don't leak, and back yards free of mouldy puddles!

(There's a lot of yay in this post, which is in and of itself a yay!)
