It took a tsunami to show me that we can afford to give a day's wages to charity. So we did. We're going to feel the pinch - and how - but we can do it and we'll recover.

No, I'm not telling you how much that is; just that mpk's Geek Aid thing isn't as far-fetched as I thought.

But it will be a while before we do this again.

Happy, peaceful and prosperous New Year. May it be less stressful for everyone I know than the previous one.

*nods* - if you can afford to indulge in booze, baccy, chocolate (like me) - or aught else, really - books, biking, off-roading, music - then covenanting a monthly fraction of what you spend on your indulgence to a charity investing in developing fair trade, the communications infrastructure & suchlike can add more (uk charities can claim back any uk income tax you've paid if you tick "gift aid" [or similar]) and helps allow them to budget better - and while it can't and won't eliminate catastrophically powerful natural disasters, and the need for emergency relief and rebuilding work afterwards, it can and usually will make it possible for their effects to be minimised.

both are needed, funding for relief & reconstruction work more-or-less unpredictably so, 'til, like now, it happens; for medium & longer-term investment the need is known, and just about any and everyone can help - with both.
