Last night I was wondering what exactly TOG means. I mean, yes, how warm it keeps you - but what does it measure? What does TOG stand for? The best I can come up with is Thermal Outerwear Grade.

Today we brought Linnea to play on the swings, but the playground was closed, so we walked along to the next one. This one has baby swings, with safe seats to put the baby in so she could swing on her own! It was so grown-up my heart almost broke. She quite liked the roundabout but wasn't very keen on the slide.

Rob baked a birthday cake for our friend Ellie; a sponge cake made of eggs, flour and sugar. It was great; he's never baked a cake entirely unsupervised before and it came out beautifully. And the best part is that I can eat it because it has no butter in it! We put apricot jam on it and everyone else had whipped cream too. Getting a sponge cake right first time with an oven that randomly adjusts its own temperature and has no thermostat at all is a serious achievement, I think.

Many people think I'm crazy for not putting photos of Linnea online when I discuss her in my journal, especially since I discuss such deeply private, personal and shameful things as the state of my perineum for all the world to see. I'm still not putting pictures up. Some people can have copies emailed to them, but not everyone. I don't like the idea of photos of my baby being Out There, and the universe will have to cope with that.

You can always make do with the nursery rhymes instead.

tog: a metric unit used to describe the insulating properties of cloth. If the flow of heat through the cloth is 1 watt per square meter, then the insulating value in togs is 10 times the temperature difference, in Celsius degrees (or kelvins), between the two sides of the cloth. This makes the tog equal to exactly 0.1 m2K/W or about 0.645 clo. "Togs," now a slang word in English, is derived from an old Dutch/North German word tuig or tög meaning "the clothes you're wearing."

I remember having a small framed baby swing which would go in the garden but could also be used indoors - it was a great success.

I'd like to see the 'growing' pictures but I've always been twitchy about pictures of my own kids in public, especially when they were smaller. I'm less fussed about pictures where they are part of a group of people.

A password protected site (protected from bots also as far as possible) is a compromise. Is there someone who could set such a thing up for you? [g,d&r]

Words are pictures, too

I don't blame you for not putting picture up for all and sundry, no matter what else you share. Your writing is awfully effective at getting her personality across, to say nothing of the pleasure of the nursery rhymes.

Just another random stranger chiming in...

I'd love to see what Linnea looks like if you're happy to e-mail me a photo

tiggsybabes @ gmail.com

I was actually wondering whether I want to put newborn photos of tigglet in my fotopic a/c or not. Or whether to pw protect them. Or whether to just e-mail them. All this even though I have newborn photos of Kate now up when I was feeling broody a couple of months ago & uploaded photos I hadn't shared before (apart from by e-mail to rl friends & family)

Well done Rob - I still have trouble with my oven and cakes, and I've been baking for years.

Are you off dairy for Linnea's sake or for yours? I gave up dairy once we realised that was the cause of YoungBloke's incredible nappies. After a few months I slowly reintroduced and he's been fine, but we had to do it slowly. So if you want, there may come a time when you can have it again.

As for pics, I can understand that. You discuss your beautiful Linnea, you don't post pictures of her. You discuss such deeply private things as the state of your perineum, you don't post pictures of that. Seems utterly fair! Although I personally would love to see a pic of her I'd far rather see all three of you. I may have to pull myself together and get along to the next Discworld Con and say hello.
