I was hanging out the laundry this morning and listening to the sound tests for Reading Festival. And the sirens of the police cars and ambulances, of course.

The local papers often publish the rape count on the Tuesday after.

Reading was the first festival that I ever attended.

I had just had my 16th birthday. We three girls collected our GCSE results that morning, and then did the long train journey from Scarborough to Reading.

We set up our tent at 11.30pm in the pouring rain.

We had a brilliant festival. At that age, I suspect strongly that I wasn't at all careful about looking after myself... but I do know that for the majority of the time we were there, that the three of us stuck together, thank goodness.

We were invited back to the hotel room of a singer from a then very popular band, as we were walking into town one day. We said no. If I remember correctly, we actually turned him down by explaining that we were going to find a pub so we could go for a shit. Wow. Weren't we charming!

I only went to Reading once, just for the day, and found it gruesome. But I sort of grew up on tiny, friendly, marvellous festivals. WOMAD was huge and scary to us.
