Janice and Emma came over yesterday afternoon / evening and Emma and I changed into swimsuits and sat in the paddling pool getting cooler. Then Emma popped corn on the barbecue and cooked dinner for us. We ate a lot of cheese. On Saturday, Rob and I bought cold pies and cold cut meat at Sweeneys, and cheese and cider at the County Stores delicatessen. On Saturday and Sunday, we ate them. Yum. Wensleydale, Gloucester, Red Leicester, Gubbeen, and Emmental.

The cider was pretty good, too, and the bottle it came in is nice. Sitting around in the dusk in a damp swimsuit was nice too; not very English-feeling. This weather is odd.

We get summers like this every once in a while - sometimes two years on the trot... it's cyclical. Last ones I can remember were 1976 & 1977 - the difference this time around it that we had enough rain earlier in the year to provide for this hot spell (whereas in those other years the reservoirs were already half-empty when the heat started).

I also remember during the 70's "hotspot" we were plagued by aphids... and then by ladybirds (due to the number of aphids there had been). I used to swim at an outside pool in those days, and they had to get us out every 15 minutes to skim the surface to remove the ladybirds!

This is what makes Britain so interesting weather-wise :-)
