I had a rough morning and at some point I picked up my watch, which had my engagement ring strung on the strap for safekeeping, and put it down again.

I have no idea where.

I have checked the obvious places, and some less obvious places, and I can't help but wonder whether Rob was right and I managed to drop it down the loo - I was incoherent and almost blind with pain at more than one point before 08:30 and could have done almost anything. It doesn't seem to have been in the washing machine (I still have no idea why I decided to do laundry at 7:45 am, it must have been pain-induced dementia) and it's not around the laptop on the dining table or anywhere else I can easily think of to look. Attached to the watch, it's too big to fall between the floorboards, which is a good thing.

However, Rob and I had a lovely evening yesterday, culminating in a cup of hot chocolate in a local cafe which has burgundy leather wing chairs. Rob's hair is nicer now that we have a shower and he can wash it every day. We're getting married in 16 days. That makes the engagement ring less important; I can always ask him not to wear his on the wedding day if it hasn't turned up. We can't afford to have it replaced; we should have had it insured.

I wonder how far down the system the watch and ring could be if they have been flushed? I'd have thought they were too heavy to make it up the other side of the U-bend.

It's much more likely that you put it down either to pick something else up, or to balance yourself if you were swaying. My sense of balance is awful when I've just woken up, and I often leave things on tables and shelves by doors because I have to grab things to keep myself upright.

Try in cupboards - where you keep the washing powder, for instance.

it'll turn up, just as soon as you stop looking for it!

Much experience of doing this suggests that it will turn up, eventually, in a completely nonobvious place where you have already looked.

Until then, comiserations, and the hot chocolate and burgundy wing chairs sounded wonderful.
