The Holiday Begins
Jun. 3rd, 2003 11:59 pmThis bordig I woge up wid by dode blogged ad by throde sore.
So I took a bunch of Lemsip Max Strength Sinus Special Nukem Drugs. And promptly got high as a kite :)
Then I tootled off to meet Janice, and we set off to the train station, pausing to return as I forgot things in my sinus-and-decongestant-induced haze. We got a train easily enough, and our connection was fairly easy, and the bus connection was slightly more complicated than it needed to be (we missed the signpost at Wareham showing us where the bus stop was) and we ate and drank along the way. I gradually got less stupid and drug-hazed.
We stopped off in Corfe to eat lunch (in the Bankes Arms Hotel, which did an excellent pie and an adequate fish thing), and view Corfe Castle, which was lovely and castly and so on. The sun shone beautifully in a boding-well-for-the-holiday way. We decided to book into the hotel for the last night (Friday) of the holiday, too.
Then we admitted to the real reason for having stopped in Corfe, and bought tickets for the Steam Train to Swanage. Oooooh. Old-fashioned pasteboard tickets, which Janice had never seen in real life before, and real stream trainitude with woo-woo noises and great clouds of steam rolling over the fields.
At Swanage, we first found the beach - Janice gets very excited at the sight of the sea - and then our B&B, which appeared to be entirely empty apart from us. The room was very peculiar, too. It seemed to have once been two rooms and a passageway. The bathroom was built into what looked like a walk-in cupbard which had had two doors; it still had both cupbard doors, though one of them opened onto the wrong side of a partition wall.
Then we went to look at the beach and the town and found an Italian eatery called, imaginatively enough, Mamas, where I ate the spiciest thing on the menu to clear my sinuses and we drank some wine.
