For all my social networking things, I want the following: an interface with a lot of boxes, so that I can drag'n'drop names from one to another. I want to have a big box containing "everyone else" and be able to create a lot of other boxes (friends, family, public figures, politicians, people I like, people who smell funny, etc) and drag names from "everyone else" into the specific boxes *so that there's absolutely no duplication at all unless I select some sort of "copy" option*. That's the bit I've never managed with any of the things I actually use. Ever.

I *think* google plus does that. I've been trying to get to grips with it recently and really prefer it to facebook except there aren't enough people I know using it yet!

I don't think Google+ does the 'no duplication' bit. It is superior to facebook in pretty much every way except getting everyone to use it though. I love the drag and drop interface for putting people in circles.

You want your boxes to be disjoint, right? That is, no one can be in 2 boxes?

*nod* Neither LJ nor DW offer that feature that I know. (Might be interesting to suggest it and see what other users think.)

if dw has an api to add/remove people from groups, this could even be done as a third-party webapp

Actually, both DW and LJ have one, kinda. The existing page (which handles a single group at a time and thus isn't what ailbhe is asking for) uses AJAXy Javascript to manage groups and add/remove users, and the "API" the JS frontend uses to tak to servers, while awkward to use, woud probaby be enough for that use as well.
