I was awake before 5:30 am! I woke up because I thought I heard a cat! And then I thought I heard male voices downstairs! I thought someone said "Basil"! Or maybe "That's all"! And I lay in bed for about fifteen minutes before going down to check, and there was no sign of anyone and no way anyone could have got in! But I was TERRIFIED and had to check the children and the cats and couldn't get back to sleep, in spite of not letting myself have my coffee until after 7:30!

Jeez.

Still, it meant I got laundry started. I've taken down all the dry laundry and sorted it, and put on our bedding.

I do wonder about our laundry. We have four beds (three or four loads depending on underblankets) and a set of towels, every week, and then our clothes on top of that - Rob's clothes, we know from prior experience, are one load a week on their own, just because of the size of his shoulders. That doesn't include nappies. How can we have so much laundry? Do I overindulge my taste for clean bedding? What is it?

I tend to do about one wash a week for just-me (college washing machines take a 5kg load). I do bedding and (single) towel fortnightly & alternating. I tend to rewear trousers and jumpers over the course of a week, but new underwear/socks/tops every day. I don't bother separating out colours or fabrics because I'd be running machines (at £1.20/wash) at least half-empty in order to have enough underpants available.

I also aim for fortnightly (rather than weekly) for bedding and towels. I love love love clean sheets but I'm much more likely to actually manage them fortnightly.

If I were more organized I'd be washing my own bed linen once a week, but I'm not. And I cannot think of a delicate way to put this but I am not at high risk for getting body fluids on my sheets compared to people in other stages of life, who presumably might benefit more from having clean sheets.

But ... one thing I really don't like about being single is making the bed and reassembling the duvet cover by myself.
