Did you really think http://twitpic.com/4xkdwr was a reasonable advert? Non-consent is not sexy, STDs are not sexy, and being in doubt as to whether or not one's sexual partner is a lying, dangerous disease vector is not sexy. The morning after pill is not sexy, morning sickness is not sexy, lying awake at night wondering what to do is not sexy. What on earth were you thinking?

Holy crap. Tee hee, I wonder if I've been forcibly exposed to a whole host of diseases and possibly unwanted pregnancy! How pleasantly puzzled I feel about the whole thing!

Apparently it was used in India earlier this year, according to a friend of [livejournal.com profile] stellanova's.

It looks quite old but not so old that it predates HIV so whenever it was made, they should have bloody well known better. Thank you for writing that.

*nods* I would hope at the least they've learned from it and could be more proactive pro consent and stuff in future ads or whatever.

The only way that advert is sexy is in the context of a fluid-bonded relationship where both partners have been certified as free of STDs, and the woman has an always-present alternative method of contraception such as the Pill or coil.

Do you think that's what Durex meant? I'm... not so sure. I really don't know of any other women in long-term relationships who still use condoms every time despite having a coil fitted - I don't think it's common.

However, I notice the post was dated May 2011. I wonder whether anyone complained to the Advertising Standards Agency, and whether the advert is still running? If it isn't still running, whether the advert was pulled because it was deemed unsuitable by the ASA, or if the campaign in question simply ran out?

I think it would be helpful if a person with more time than me browsed the ASA website to find the list of complaints and see whether that advert is on it. I'm not sure how long after an advertising campaign finishes you're allowed to make a complaint, but it's worth a try regardless. I'd be happy to add my email to a campaign to the ASA about the unsuitability of that advert for the target audience.

Given that the ASA doesn't regulate ads in India, I doubt they've done anything, or indeed received any complaints.
