The morning went well; the house was so reasonable before I woke up that the morning housework was easy. We went out to town on the train (cheaper for all three of us to buy return train tickets than for me to get a return bus ticket on my own?!) and got sorbet in the Tuuti Frutti shop in the train station -- they make their own raspberry and lemon-lime-and-bitters sorbet, and serve it in tubs or cones, and so the girls walked in the sun with icecream cones and it was glorious.

First we went to Sainsburys for fruit, and then to Paperchase for Emer to spend her pocket money on things which match one of her birthday presents (they don't have much within her budget but she got a sheet of shiny stickers), and then to Lakeland for little balls of steel wool to go in the kettle and trap the limescale, and then home, and on the way home we met Tree on her way to visit us, and she gave us pansies for the hanging basket. We ate lunch, after a fashion, and I spilt beetroot juice on my white blouse, and then Emer and I filled the hanging basket with compost and put the plants in and watered it. This simple description skips over Astrid's helpful behaviour, including helping with digging, tidying the plants out of the nice neat compost after we put them in, and moving trowels around.

This evening it took me and Emer 45 minutes to peel the potatoes. She didn't want me to help, you see. Ho hum. She saw the point in the end and will allow me to help next time.

For some reason, the dishwasher didn't wash things at first - the cycle clearly ran down the minutes to the end, but the stuff remained dry. The second go worked. No idea why.

It seems to be that the thing is to get a room tidy and then maintain it religiously, rather than tidying a different room each day. The tide of cleanliness is creeping slowly across the house. I hope.

So today I had no pills but tomorrow I will have a prescription waiting for me at the doctor's and can take it to the pharmacy. Tomorrow will be better still.

(I think we will buy a sentry-box style outdoor cupboard/shed. Maybe. Can I find one only two feet deep, for less than one meeeellion dollars?)
