I didn't want to make a fuss or be rude while we were visiting people, so I stayed out in the sun with Astrid even though I was too hot, because everyone else kept remarking delightedly on how lovely it was that the weather was perfect. Luckily, Rob and the older children don't feel as constrained by other people's emotional reactions to their behaviour as I do, so they wandered away from the group into the shade whenever they liked.

Astrid and I are both burnt. Her scalp is burnt, and I even have a burnt eyelid.

Well, that's me told, and at least it's mild pinkish burn, rather than serious. It shan't happen again.

Probably other people have already told you, but the older children feeling free to wander off to the shade, that is a parenting win.

In which I am a horrible person: You win a hat.

Children taking care of themselves - definitely a win.

Aiee...wishing you quick recovery, and noting that "perfect" weather varies so much that I am definitely inclined to go for everyone monitor their own. (I try, when I am the hostess, but I am not the expert on anyone else but me. And I fail that one at times, too.)

I totally agree with this comment - I don't get sun poisoning, but I find sitting in the sun very uncomfortable (one reason I dislike going to the beach - there's no shade!), and would always rather sit in the shade. And with a small baby, you have the perfect excuse to do so!

I agree with this. No reasonable person will be offended or upset that you want to protect your baby from sunburn (or that you want to protect yourself from it, for that matter). It's not rude to put the needs of your baby first.
