Oh, it's not sudden! She's been drifting towards it for years - literally genuinely years - as she worked on her thoughts on death, compassion, animal welfare, nutrition etc. She's hoping that if we can all go vegetarian we can then persuade everyone else to too. (This won't work; a vegetarian diet seems to make me pretty ill).
I'm concerned/wondering whether she can cope with the idea that animals will die regardless...that she can't make lions vegetarian.
At the same time, I'm glad beyond words that she is that empathetic and compassionate. (Because I'm struggling with a three-year-old's lack of empathy.) I'm also pondering the etiquette of evangelism.
If she stays vegetarian - and at 7 years old, I imagine that decision may not be set in stone (although it may, especially if she actively dislikes meat) - will that be a problem for your family, or an opportunity?
Perhaps you and Rob can do as we do and have meat on Sundays (or whenever suits you for a special meal) and eat more-or-less vegetarian the rest of the week? Or did I see that you find you need meat a little more often than that?
Oh yes; I tend to be vegetarian anyway, and was deliberately so from age 14-18. Now I have to remember to eat meat or I get pretty sick, so we try to have meat several times a week. But if I'm just cooking from day to day, not planning, I can accidentally end up eating veggie for a week or two at a time.
