Back to the dentist, more antibiotics, I bet. I wonder how often "several times" is - that's how often this has to happen before they TAKE THE DAMN THING OUT.
They won't touch it while it's infected. You'll need to remember to book an appointment for when it doesn't hurt any more (and also remember which tooth it was).
Three or more flare-ups within a year or so, according to the NHS guidelines. I've just got referred to my local hospital for a couple of extractions (probably under general, since they're only partially erupted.) One of my teeth has only flared up once, but we figured that since I'll be under anyway it'd be a shame not to have that one out too.
As a slight addendum - the trick in my case was to tell the dentist specifically that it had flared up four times in the past year (truly enough), at which point we started talking about extraction. Be warned, though, that even if they refer you then and there, surgical extraction can have a turnaround time of 90 days (at least, that's the NHS target.)
I have to say that this dentist is a very nice chap (and, alarmingly, looks younger than me.) Had the X-rays up on his computer within 5 minutes of exposure, and we went through them together. We even had a chat about the radiation dosemeters they used, as I was able to identify them from my research!
Can you not just tell them to take it out since you're going to have to pay for the treatment be it antibiotics or extraction? Sorry if there's an obvious reason why not ...
