I've been taking codeine - codeine, to which I was addicted, which makes me sick - and paracetamol and ibuprofen and I still want to hit people.

There's nothing visibly wrong, but my head is throbbing as though it's swollen to the size of a London black taxi.

If I go to bed, I hope Rob is sound enough asleep not to be woken as I toss, turn, and whimper. Because if he wakes up, I am almost guaranteed to add whining to my repertoire.

Poor ole Rob. But at least he doesn't have wisdom teeth.

So get it fixed or extracted. It will hurt much less in the long run than to suffer with a bad tooth.

I'm really, really, REALLY sorry that I may have sounded harsh or unfeeling.

I assumed (incorrectly) that you were afraid or reluctant to go to the dentist for the tooth. Your subsequent post proves I was very wrong.

I HATE going to the dentist but I tell myself it's a short-term discomfort to avoid bigger problems. Most of the time I can convince myself. (I have an appointment Thursday to deal with a filling that fell out of a molar. I feel a crown coming on....)

Have you ever tried clove oil?

It's supposed to help numb the gums.

I'm another vote for "get it out" if it's causing that much pain... at least see a dentist.

Go to the dentist. Not necessarily to get it extracted, but the worst wisdom tooth pain I had turned out to be because the tip of the emerging tooth had made the tiniest of holes in the gum and got infected, irritated yet more by the pushing tooth, and the infection went all the way back into my jaw and up to my ear and could have done me serious damage if I hadn't got antibiotics.

Had mine all extracted surgically ... it wasn't particularly unpleasant as surgeries go, though I had impressive bruising to my throat indicating the struggle they had to extract the teeth. Mine were lying transverse I think ... they were never going to come through properly and were causing me problems so extraction was suggested and I haven't looked back since. Hope you find a solution for yours.

Ouch. I sympathise - I've been having similar nights recently, including the codeine and paracetamol (and prescription anti-inflammatories instead of ibuprofen), although not with teeth. Pain in the night is horrible, especially when you can't move or make a noise in case you wake someone up. I hope it clears up/gets fixed soon.

I think this suggestion may make you want to hit me, but relaxation really can help. It's like adding another couple of paracetemol on top. For me, it makes the difference between unbearable and merely lboody awful. I use a ten-minute relaxation video on you tube and spend a while clenching and relaxing different body areas in turn - when in pain, thinking beautiful thoughts really doesn't cut it, but the video keeps me focused.
