I have cocodamol, I have paracetamol, I have ibuprofen, and I have Metronidazole 200mg, and I have a wisdom tooth so painful I almost had a panic attack.

If I get more than two or three episodes of pain and pus this bad, they will consider removing it ("doing something else," she said).

Now, to be fair, none of my xrays over the past ten years have indicated that my wisdom teeth were problematic, but surely it's better for them to take it out than for me to attempt it myself with a wood chisel and a camping mallet?

Still, at least we have low-dose codeine in the house, all I had for The Other Thing was 30mg pills. This is 8/500. Far more reasonable for most things.

I'm glad you got painkillers. I recently had all 4 wisdom teeth out, six years after my first bought of serious pain from them so I can ramble about pros and cons a bit if you'd like but I won't now as you probably don't want to hear it. It's worth remembering that they won't take them out during an infection in case the infection gets into the blood from the wound, they prefer to fix with antibiotics first then remove. I think the same logic should apply to diy surgery as well!

I wonder if it might be the case that quite a few people have wisdom teeth that do this once or twice, then are fine for the rest of their lives, so that it's probably a good idea to send them away with drugs a couple of times, but after that do serious dental surgery?

I haven't had anything remotely this bad, but I did have a few years in my twenties in which one wisdom tooth used to pop up and down with fairly considerable pain. Eventually, it popped up and stayed up, and I haven't had any trouble in the last ten years or so. So I suppose that supports the cautious approach, though if I had Ailbhe's level of pain I'd definitely plump for wanting it out ASAP!

It's worth bearing in mind that I have a fairly low pain tolerance since the whole "you must expect some discomfort after childbirth" débacle.
