ZOO

We went out to the Zoo - train from Reading West at half past ten, much dashing, Rob and Linnea ran into the Zoo first to use the loo and then Emer and I arrived at the main entrance and then Dave did too and Rob and Linnea came back and we all went in properly.

It was cold out there today. Luckily both my girls were in boys' trousers - that is, not cut to cling to the thighs, and lined for winter weather and extra padding for sitting on cold outdoor things like swings, benches, etc. They had hats and gloves too but those were on-again-off-again.

We had a baby backpack / hiking thing for Emer, on Rob's back, and I had a long sling, which I haven't used much before. I think the faff of getting Emer into it may not be worth the effort, compared with my shorter one, because she rarely stays on my back for long any more. Though she did nap in it long-term on my back today, and that woudl have been harder with a shorter sling. It's hard to judge.

In the Zoo we saw butterflies, which Emer adored and Linnea was alarmed by, and penguins being fed, which [livejournal.com profile] clanwilliam adored, and meerkats, and giraffes, and okapi, and some hogs and warthogs and hyena-hunting-dog things, and lots of fish and starfish and seahorses, and flamingoes and vultures and other things. And tigers, which Emer needed to watch while being held by me, and Linnea now claims not to have seen at all, in spite of having seen them very very close. One came almost nose to nose with the girls through the glass.

Emer really liked the giraffes.

It was very cold. It's hard work being out and about in that kind of cold, and the girls weren't really ready for it. Also, because we'd left so late we didn't have as much time for cafe-and-warming-up breaks as I'd hoped. But we'll probably go again, because the 2-for-1 deal with a train ticket is very good. Nex ttime I will bring a mei tai for Emer, not a wrap sling, because she wasn't up for being wrapped, and she would need to nap. It's a big day, Zooing.

After the Zoo I abandoned the children to the tender mercies of [livejournal.com profile] rrc, [livejournal.com profile] gmh and Dave - or possibly vice versa - and [livejournal.com profile] clanwilliam and I went to a pub where I was due to meet other people later. That was pleasant though I do think I am not much of a pub person and once the place filled up the noise and pubbishness of it all gave me a headache.

However, I got to meet [livejournal.com profile] glitzfrau and [livejournal.com profile] biascut and various other people, albeit briefly, and even spoke to them, and admired rings and shoes and things, and as usual was delighted b the ease and kindness between them - similar to what I see between G and J, or J and K, and something I have always found it difficult to achieve. I wonder whether I'm a difficult Type, or wha'.

I suspect wha', in the form of PMS and tiredness, perhaps. But that might also be wishful thinking.

After the pub we were fetched back by the men and the babies, saw the Reclaim the Night march, showed it to Linnea who missed its significance entirely, and went towards Paddington Station, shedding Londoners as we went, and finally J handed Emer to me and we got on a train and came home.

Some drunk, obscene, singing idiots kept turning all the lights in the carriage off for the hell of it.

Oh, and on the Tube to Paddington the guy next to me tried to pick my pocket, but I caught him at it, and he smiled winningly at me (he what?!) and just made friendly faces at Linnea until we got off. That was exceedingly odd, and had I not had Linnea on my lap, I would have been tempted to be unpleasant.

It worked - he wasn't beaten up, arrested or whatever.
