It occurs to me that if we just move our bed to the back bedroom, we don't need to soundproof the floor against its being a children's room at all, because we can just lock them out.

I'll bear that in mind.

The loudest noise this house carries unwished-for is the noise of people moving, walking, jumping or dropping things on the back-bedroom floor / kitchen ceiling. It can be very very loud from inside the kitchen.
